The department is involved in various research activities both at the individual and departmental level. At the individual level, research on various cultural aspects like mortuary practice, health related issues, socio-economic effects and other variables on birth weight etc have been of concern. At the departmental level, ethnographic studies have been conducted among various tribes of North-East India of which mention may be made of the Karbis, the Tiwas, the Kamars, and so on. These ethnographic accounts conducted both at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate level can be found in the department Library.
At the PhD level, around 17 scholars have been awarded the degree under the guidance of some of the faculty members. The department also has taken up Post-Doctoral Fellow in the recent times.
Besides the ongoing research the department plans to develop partnership and collaborations with scientists that share the same interest and also broaden the horizon by sharing our expertise in the field for interdisciplinary research.
