Molecular Anthropology Laboratory

Molecular Laboratory of the Department was established in the year 2018 with the support from Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Laboratory provides a platform for the training of students pursuing their masters and doctoral research work in areas of biological anthropology. This laboratory is mainly for research work related to Human population genetics, Molecular anthropology and Genetic epidemiology. The Laboratory has facilities like UV-spectrophotometer, genomic DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, Gradiant PCR. A DNA bank of populations from tribal and caste populations collected from Assam are also maintained in the laboratory. The Department provides students with hands-on training and awareness programmes in various techniques of biological Anthropology, thereby strengthening their practical competencies and promoting experiential learning.

The following equipment have been purchased with the financial assistance of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, under the project titled ‘Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency among Three Tribes of Assam, India and its Significance for Antimalarial Therapy’ ( BT/PR25312/NER/95/1344/2017), implemented by Dr Maishnam Rustam Singh, PI, during the period 24/09/2018 to 23/03/2022.
