Medical Tourism in India: Some Critical Reflections from Public Health Perspectives Indian healthcare delivery system has two major components- public and private. The public healthcare system, is overburdened and with limited resources, comprises limited secondary and tertiary care institutions in key cities and focuses on providing basic healthcare facilities through its three tier model. Whereas, the private sector provides majority of secondary and tertiary care institutions with major concentration in metros and tier I and tier II cities. Corporate, tertiary and multispeciality hospitals offers World Class Medical Facilities, comparable with any of the western countries, with state of the art hospitals, experienced and qualified doctors, best infrastructure and facilities, accompanied with the most competitive prices as compared to the western world. Ministry of Tourism and Culture lists more than hundred hospitals across the country, few public hospitals of repute and all the corporate hospitals for promoting health care for international patients under the attractive, popular and marketable concept “Medical Tourism” (MT). This invited lecture will address some of the critical questions; What is medical tourism and corporatization of medical care? Why India is a MT destination? What are the push and pull factors for foreign patients to come to India? What are the policy shifts which have promoted MT? How it is promoted and why? What are the implications on the public health care service systems and changing dynamics of health care?
